Closed Session #1 - Talking about Sustainable Development and Climate Change with Rémi Parmentier

Tuesday, 24 November 2009 – Barcelona (4:30pm – 5:30pm)

The ASEFUAN Dialogues were born to give the opportunity to young people to share their ideas with key figures in their disciplines of study. This edition starts with such a chance: an informal meeting with Mr. Rémi Parmentier, Director of Varda Group and one of the founding members of Greenpeace (http://www.vardagroup.org/about_remi.php).

During this session participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with Mr. Parmentier. He has been attending the Barcelona Climate Talks over the past few days and will be ready to share his views on the latest developments. Closed Session #2 - The ASEFUAN Dialogues Programme – Briefing

Tuesday, 24 November 2009 – Barcelona (6:00pm – 7:00pm)

During this session participants will be briefed about some practicalities, including the reimbursement for travel subsidies, the transfer from Barcelona to Madrid and the transport connections from the hotels to the conference venues.

Closed Session #3 - Sustainable Development from the perspective of four social actors

Wednesday, 25 November 2009 – Barcelona (4:00pm – 7:00pm)

The promotion of a more sustainable development differs when addressing individuals, public institutions, private enterprises or non-governmental organizations. How can each of these social actors contribute to making sustainability a reality? What is the role each of them should play? How do young people perceive these questions?

Lead by four local experts, participants will be divided into four working groups during this session in order to ease the discussion process. Each group will meet for 120 minutes to discuss the relationship between sustainable development and one social actor. Each facilitator will provide some guiding questions and some reading materials to be read before the sessions. The materials will be distributed on Monday, 16 November 2009.

Closed Session #4 – The road to Copenhagen and beyond: minimums and expectations

Friday, 27 November 2009 – Madrid (4:00pm – 6:30pm)

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, - COP15 later this year has been labeled as one of the ‘most important’ events of the fight against climate change. However, the preparatory meetings have revealed that there are still difficulties in order to reach common ground on how to proceed with the fight. As young experts on the topic, you will be given the opportunity to come up with a ‘Set of expectations and minimums’ for the meeting in Denmark or for the upcoming conferences.

ASEFUAN Pecha Kucha – 15x20x20

Friday, 27 November 2009 – Madrid (8:00pm – 10:00pm)

As a conclusion to the ASEFUAN Dialogues, a special event has been planned. Taking after the popular Pecha Kucha Nights (http://www.pecha-kucha.org/what), this session will allow participants to present their work and projects to the rest of the group and to some students from business schools in Madrid who will be invited to this session. A standardized format will be used for the presentations: 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. That is, presenters will have 400 seconds (six minutes and forty seconds) to try to get their message to the audience.

All 15 presentations will be published on the website of the event. Some of the authors will be invited to prepare a short paper regarding the topic of their presentation to be included in the final publication of the event prepared by Casa Asia.

Open Session #1 - A Global challenge: the implementation of renewable energies

Wednesday, 25 November 2009 – Barcelona (10:00am – 11:30 am)

Representatives of the key multilateral institutions will analyse the sustainable development models of their organisations, the main programmes developed to reach those goals and the possibilities of international cooperation offered by each programme.

Open Session #2 - Political and Environmental Strategies of Selected Asian countries

Wednesday, 25 November 2009 – Barcelona (12:00pm – 1:30pm)

Most countries in Asia and Europe are moving towards new energy models that will lead to a more sustainable development of their economies. Learning about energy policies in Asian countries can be an excellent opportunity that can lead to implementing the European models as well as creating synergies in international cooperation issues against Climate Change.

Open Session #3 - Sustainability and Climate Change: A Global Challenge

Thursday, 26 November 2009 – Madrid (5:00pm – 6:30 pm)

High ranking officials of multilateral and national organizations will explain the socioeconomic costs of Climate Change, the new key issues in their energy strategies and programmes and the exact measures that are being carried on in order to achieve a more efficient management of energy resources.

Open Session #4 - International Cooperation and Energy Policies to achieve a Sustainable Development

Thursday, 26 November 2009 – Madrid (6:30pm – 8:00pm)

Climate Change is causing a deep impact in Asian and African developing nations, especially among the least favoured members of society, who make a living from climate-sensitive activities. Representatives of international development organisations will present their programmes regarding adaptation to or mitigation of Climate Change impacts and the importance of working towards Sustainable Development.

Open Session #5 – Sustainable Policies of Energy Policies of Selected Asian and African countries

Friday, 27 November 2009 – Madrid (9:00am – 10:30am)

Most countries are establishing policies to promote a more Sustainable Development of their economies. However, the implementation of these political strategies is not homogeneous. This session will revise some of the best practices and strategies in the transition towards improved energy models based on clean energies.

Open Session #6 - Business Cooperation in the Energy Sector

Friday, 27 November 2009 – Madrid (10:30am – 11:45am)

The world has developed clean technologies that could be used to reach the 2020 goals on reducing CO2 emissions. However, there is a clear need to better promote these technologies in order to extend their use. The central point of this session will be to explore the role of the private sector in achieving a more sustainable economy through technology development.

Open Session #7 - The Wind Energy Sector: New Opportunities and Challenges

Friday, 27 November 2009 – Madrid (12:15pm – 1:30pm)

This session will examine the possibilities of business cooperation in the wind power industry, a sector in which Spain can offer its technological know-how and worldwide competitiveness.
